Experience some of the wonders of Dominica’s marine environment the safe and easy way - Snorkeling & Scuba Diving!!

As I mentioned in a previous article, Dominica is not known for its beaches. Dominica's beaches are made up of dark gray or jet black volcanic sands. The shores are somewhat rocky, and not suited to barefoot strolls; however, if you are an avid snorkel fan, then you will definitely want to visit Champagne!!

Champagne, which is aptly named because of the bubbles which rise from below the area, is Dominica's premier snorkeling site. It is shrouded by palm trees, and is full of sunshine and a great spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. The peace and quiet found at this location is just what many persons are looking for; yet, one is still in close proximity to the city and its amenities. Champagne is located 1.8 miles from Soufriere Sulphur Springs, on the southern coast of Dominica. Champagne is close to Pointe Michel, so walking the town is a definite option.

The main attraction at Champagne is the calm, warm waters with little or no currents. The reef is located just offshore, teeming with tropical fish including Black Bar soldier Fish, an array of invertebrates like banded shrimp, squid and arrow crabs; and other forms of vibrant sea life like seahorses and frogfish.

The crowd at Champagne is dependent on the time of year (cruise season) and day of the week; although there may be some other factors. So, when deciding whether or not to visit Champagne, or any other beach in Dominica for that matter, take these factors into consideration. While some like a crowded beach with plenty of people and activity, some prefer to just hear the sounds of the waves.

Like many places in Dominica this beach has its own personality which is a bit different from most other locations in Dominica, and will be more appealing to some than to others.
