Cruising Dominica!!

U.S. Divers Admiral 2 Lx / Gulf Dry Adult Silicone Mask Combo (Electric Blue)Dominica is an increasingly popular cruise ship destination, with unspoiled scenic terrain and eco-adventures to offer visitors. It is slowly becoming a regular port of call for many major cruise lines. The island has three berths that accommodate cruise ships: the Bayfront in Roseau, the capital; Deep Water Harbour, Woodbridge Bay - just 5 minutes north of Roseau; and The Cabrits in Portsmouth - about an hour's drive north of Roseau. Presently, the island is experiencing an economic boost because of the increase in cruise tourism.

Several Cruise Lines (both large and small) leaving from destinations such as Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, Bridgetown, San Juan, and St. John's call on Dominica; with the busiest time of year being mid-November to mid-April. For visitors who are calling to Roseau, there are many things to do in and around Roseau, such as the Emerald Pool known as the “Fountain of Youth,” the twin Trafalgar Falls, and the ever increasing popular snorkeling at Champagne Reef. They can also enjoy a number of other activities, including hiking through the island's rainforests, scuba diving and kayaking, and whale and dolphin watching. Cruises can be a good way to explore the island of Dominica without spending an entire vacation there.

The popular cruise travel season in the Caribbean, is identical to the popular tourist travel season for the rest of the region. Although Dominica is in the rainforest, the weather is at its driest during this time, and cruise travelers are less likely to be rained out by the heavy yearly rainfall. At the north of the Windward Islands, Dominica is also subject to Atlantic hurricanes and tropical storms, making cruising to the island during the summer hurricane season a little riskier. Fares on cruises during the off season may be reduced, but travelers should consider the risks and benefits before embarking.

Cruise Vessels

Since both large and small cruise vessels call upon the three ports in Dominica, travelers should carefully consider the type of cruise they wish to have along with the specifications of the ship they are interested in. Smaller vessels typically attract travelers with luxury cruises and a high level of customer care and attention. Larger cruise ships offer amenities and benefits that may not be available on smaller ships. Larger ships can also offer luxury cruises, but passengers will be competing with a large number of other vacationers for space.

If you would prefer to stay away from the crowds, then consider a cruise vessel with a capacity hold of a few hundred passengers rather than the thousands held by large cruise vessels. What is the best place on the larger vessels for those who suffer from seasickness, you ask? The middle of course, as rocking is typically not as strong there.

Class, Cabin, and Cost

No matter your budget you can enjoy taking a Caribbean cruise. The key is selecting a cruise class that meets your budget. There are many amenities and benefits for travelers, ranging from entertainment to luxury rooms stocked with designer items. The larger cruise vessels may offer other benefits such as casinos, live musical entertainment, comedy and live shows, dancing, and others that smaller cruise vessels do not or are unable to offer. However, many smaller vessels are able to offer increased customer service and designer products. No matter your choice of cruise class, travelers can get many and sometimes all of these benefits.

The price of a cruise ship cabin or stateroom is dependent on its size, layout, and location. Cabins on larger cruise ships are often advertised as standard inside, ocean view, balconied, or suite. The smallest cabins on luxury lines are much larger than those on mainstream lines and are either ocean view or balconied, making the quality of accommodations one of the biggest differences between cruise lines. Cabin and balcony size and cabin location can vary significantly within the same price range on any ship.

Packing

Caribbean cruises produce occasions for swimming, hiking, formal dining, and dancing, and so you will need to pack accordingly. However, because cabins can be small, travelers should try to pack as lightly as possible.
Some cruise vessels may have specific dress codes for restaurants, casinos, and special events; and so travelers should check with their cruise line prior to packing to learn whether a jacket, tie, or even a suit will be required.
You will need beachwear and active wear regardless of the type of cruise. Sunglasses, hats, and sunscreenLoving Naturals SPF 30 Sunscreen Zinc Oxide 5 Oz. UVA/UVB Vegan are essential. Dominica offers wonderful opportunities for hiking and exploring so bring hiking boots or casual walking shoes, pants, a poncho and bug spray.

Dress on the Caribbean islands is neat but casual, and travelers are advised never wear beachwear or revealing clothing in any other location but the pool or beach. Cruise passengers who will be dining in local restaurants or exploring the shops and towns of Dominica or any other island should pack clothing that is appropriate. Travelers can wear shorts but should always attempt to look neat and presentable.

Cruise travel to Dominica has continued to grow in popularity in recent years, as more and more travelers are taking a day to soak up some sun and discover the rainforests, waterfalls, and scuba diving of this lush tropical getaway.
